10:30am Pioneering Women: Economic Growth Center and Yale Economics

Join the Yale Economic Growth Center (EGC) for a panel recognizing the contributions of three women – Mariam Chamberlain, Mary Reynolds, and Nancy Ruggles – PhDs who were instrumental in founding EGC. All three were let go due to biased rules but went on to brilliant careers outside Yale. Against this backdrop, the panel will discuss efforts to overcome gender bias in academia, then and now.

From world leaders to emerging talents, the symposium spotlights our alumnae who are making an impact in their fields.

7:30pm Remembering 50 Book Launch

Join the Yale Women’s Leadership Initiative on September 10th from 7:30–9:00 PM ET for the launch of their book, Remembering 50! The Women’s Leadership Initiative at Yale has published a book of stories from alumni and current students from Yale College and various professional schools. The book focuses on the experiences of womxn at Yale, as well as how the acceptance of womxn has shaped Yale culture and affected the Yale experience.

(All day) Advanced film screening ‘Picture a Scientist’

This film tracks the journeys of three women – biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring – as they recount their own battles with gender inequity in academic science. It was an official selection of the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival: The Boston Globe calls it “quietly devastating” while Science refers to it as “sweeping in scope yet intimately compelling”.

The film will be available to watch from September 9 - 16 and registration is essential. Log in credentials will be sent to registered participants on September 9, and the film will be available for viewing until September 16.

4:00pm USS Hopper Anniversary Celebration

Join Yale Alumni Live from Hawaii on a tour of the USS Hopper, an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer of the United States Navy, named for the pioneering computer scientist Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopper ’30 MA, ’34 PhD. Hopper is only the second U.S. Navy warship to be named for a woman from the Navy’s own ranks. The event will include a tour, live Q&A and a view into the ship’s ceremony.  The tour will be led by YAA Executive Director Weili Cheng ’77 and LTJG Amour Wilhelm, USN ’17.
